Why Single-Touch Follow-Up Fails

Most leads do not convert on the first contact. Research consistently shows that the majority of conversions happen between the 4th and 7th touchpoint. Yet most businesses stop following up after 1 or 2 attempts. A multi-step sequence solves this.

What a Multi-Step Sequence Is

A multi-step sequence is a series of pre-written messages, delivered across one or more channels, spaced over days or weeks, that follow a specific structure designed to move a lead from enquiry to conversion.

The Anatomy of an Effective Sequence

  1. Step 1 — Fast response: shows you are attentive and professional
  2. Step 2 — Value message: provides something useful without asking for anything
  3. Step 3 — Social proof: shows results for people in similar situations
  4. Step 4 — Objection address: handles the most common reason people hesitate
  5. Step 5 — Direct ask: clear, specific call to action
  6. Step 6 — Final message: low-pressure, permission to say no

Channel Mix

The most effective sequences use a mix of SMS and email. SMS for short, direct messages that need to feel immediate. Email for longer content, case studies, and value-adds. Varying the channel prevents the sequence from feeling like a broadcast.

Personalisation Points

The more you can personalise, the better the results. Reference the service they enquired about. Use their first name throughout. Reference their location if relevant. Even small personalisation signals make messages feel less automated.

A sequence that is too long or too frequent will result in unsubscribes and frustration. 5 to 7 messages over 7 to 10 days is usually the right range. More than that requires genuinely exceptional content to justify the frequency.
